I use pictures symbols all the time in my music therapy sessions, but they aren't part of a formal PECS system. The general idea that you are using visual, rather than verbal representations for items is really the important part. You don't need a formal system for that. I generally use board maker as much as I can, but sometimes I just have to hunt clip art sites online to find an image that I need.
